Where to Eat in Blok M: Tasty Pad Thai and Pad Krapow at Neighbor
A Little Discovery in Blok M
On a casual afternoon walk in the busy Blok M area of Jakarta, I stumbled upon a small eatery called “Neighbor”. It looked unassuming, tucked between other shops, but the smell of sizzling wok and Thai-style aromas drew me in. I decided to order two dishes: a claypot version of Pad Thai with shrimp, and Pad Krapow (Thai basil stir-fry) with rice and a sunny-side-up egg. Both turned out to be very good.
In this blog I’ll share what I tried, how it tasted, and a little bit of background on each dish so you can appreciate them even more if you ever visit.
1. Pad Thai, stir-fried flat rice noodles with shrimp
For the first dish, I watched the kitchen carry a small claypot to the table. Inside were flat rice noodles, plump shrimp, bean sprouts, chopped chilli, and a tangy sweet sauce that glistened in the warm pot. The dish was slightly smoky from the wok, robust in flavour, and served piping hot.
Here’s a short background. Pad Thai is a classic Thai street-food dish. It typically uses rice noodles stir-fried with eggs, tofu or shrimp, bean sprouts and peanuts, in a sauce that often combines tamarind paste, fish sauce, palm sugar and lime. The dish emerged in mid-20th century Thailand when the government encouraged the use of rice noodles to boost domestic consumption. Over time it became an iconic national dish.
What I like about this version at Neighbor is that the shrimp were large and juicy, the noodles were firm but tender, and the sauce had a good balance of sweet, sour and salty, with a hint of chilli that did not overwhelm the other flavours. The claypot helped keep it warm and added a slight aroma from the pot that enhanced the experience.
2. Pad Krapow, Thai basil stir-fry with rice and egg
The second dish, delivered on a pink plate, was rice topped with a fried egg and beside it a stir-fry of minced beef with red chilli pieces and fresh Thai basil leaves. This dish is widely known in Thailand as Pad Krapow and is one of the most beloved everyday Thai dishes.
The typical preparation involves minced meat, garlic, fresh chilli, soy sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce and Thai holy basil. The flavour profile is bold, spicy, aromatic with basil, savoury and slightly oily from the stir-fry. It is often eaten with rice and topped with a fried egg whose runny yolk creates a rich sauce when mixed in.
At Neighbor, the basil leaves still looked vibrant and slightly crisp, the chilli heat was present but manageable, and the egg yolk blended into the rice making each bite richer. It felt familiar to me in the way Indonesian food can feel, bold, chilli-forward and aromatic, which made it hit the sweet spot.
How They Tasted Together
Having both dishes side by side was a nice contrast. The Pad Thai was lighter with its sweet and sour noodle flavour and had a gentle chilli hint. The Pad Krapow delivered a stronger basil and chilli punch. Switching between the two kept my palate engaged and happy.
The restaurant is small and the food felt freshly made, giving a warm and authentic impression. The environment, the claypot, the fried-egg-topped rice, all added to the enjoyment. For someone in Jakarta craving the flavours of Thailand, this was a satisfying find.
Why It Fits the Indonesian Taste Buds
Indonesian food culture appreciates bold flavours such as chilli, garlic, aromatic herbs and sweet savoury combinations. These two dishes align nicely with that palate. Pad Thai offers a sweet sour balance that Indonesians often enjoy. Pad Krapow brings a familiar chilli and herb kick, which is not far from the experience of eating sambal or local basil stir-fries.
If you’re an Indonesian diner wanting to explore Thai food without stepping too far from your comfort zone, these are great choices. They deliver a distinct Thai identity, yet still feel familiar and approachable.
Tips If You Visit “Neighbor” at Blok M
Ask for your preferred chilli level. If you enjoy stronger flavour, request extra peanuts or lime for the Pad Thai. If you love aroma, ask for extra basil for the Pad Krapow. Visiting during off-peak hours will give you a more relaxed experience since the place is small. Portions are generous, so come with an appetite.
Final Thoughts
My visit to the small eatery Neighbor in Blok M turned into a pleasant little culinary discovery. The Pad Thai and Pad Krapow I tried were delicious, well executed and satisfying. Whether you’re already a fan of Thai food or just beginning to explore it, this place is definitely worth trying.
Sometimes the best meals are found in modest neighbourhood corners, and this one truly delivered.
